Check out the Roundhouse http://www.roundhouse.org.uk an arts venue that has played host to such legendary bands as The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, The Stranglers, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Led Zeppelin, to name but a few.

The Underworld (part of the World's End Pub http://www.theunderworldcamden.co.uk easy to get to as it is right by Camden Town station) is another popular music venue. Considered to be the heart of the alternative music scene, with a capacity of over 500 seats, also has a famous history hosting the likes of Queen, The Cranberries and The Darkness.

In 1900 Charlie Chaplin used to perform at the Camden Palace. Now known as Koko http://www.koko.uk.com this is THE dance and rock 'n roll venue on Camden high street.

Fun with celebrities

If you want to hang out with some celebrities (Liam Gallagher, Nicole Appleton, Kirsten Dunst, Alex Zane, Sadie Frost, Johnny Borrell, Kate Moss and Pete Docherty have been patrons) then visit The Hawley Arms . A few years ago this was just a small dusty pub until along came a juke box, a gastro-food menu and probably the most fashionable couch in Camden. Amy Winehouse used to be a regular until she went to rehab. The Hawley is by Camden Lock bridge, a short walk from the tube station. Try to get hold of a 'I hate Hawley postcard' which the pub sometimes distribute!

And then there's the Dublin Castle (94 Parkway, Camden), the sort of place where the walls drip sweat with too many people crowded into a small room. Bands such as Blurr and Madness have played there and Coldplay made their debut appearance here.

The Devonshire Arms http://devcamden.co.uk is the London's longest surviving gothic bar and generally known as 'The Dev.' This is great bar to head to for pre-club drinks, though customers are expected to observe the all-black dress code.

New talents!

Upcoming and coming talent can be seen at the Camden Barfly http://www.barflyclub.com well known for staging regular live acts.

Cage dancers and alternative genres can be found at the Electric Ballroom (was the first London ballroom in the 1930s to have electric lights) http://www.electric-ballroom.co.uk - there are 4 bars plus game machines and pool tables on the first floor.

A good mid-sized rock venue is The Forum http://www.kentishtownforum.com a former 1930s cinema and now one of London's best places to hear live music. Expect stunning architecture and opulent décor with an International and domestic mix of bands. Punk band The Clash (one of my favourite bands) recorded their seminal album - 'London Calling' at a Camden Recording studio.
